Planning a Disney World vacation is magical, but it comes with one big decision: where to stay. Your choice of accommodation can shape your entire experience, from convenience and cost to the overall atmosphere. In this post, I’ll compare the three main options: staying on-site at a Disney Resort, choosing a hotel on International Drive, or renting an apartment in areas like Kissimmee or Davenport. Let’s dive into the benefits and considerations of each to help you find the perfect fit for your family’s Disney adventure.

1. Staying On-Site at a Disney Resort
Staying on-site at one of Disney’s Resort hotels can offer a seamless and immersive experience, with perks that make it especially appealing for families.
Benefits:
• Proximity to the Parks: One of the biggest advantages of staying on-site is being close to the action. Whether you’re hopping on a bus, monorail, or even walking to the parks, Disney transportation makes it easy to access Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios without worrying about parking or traffic.
• Extra Magic Hours: Disney Resort guests often get access to early park entry or extended evening hours, which can be a huge advantage for getting on popular rides with shorter wait times. It’s perfect for early risers or families who want to squeeze in as much magic as possible.
• Immersive Theming: Disney’s resorts are known for their incredible theming, which can enhance the experience for kids and Disney lovers. From staying in the middle of a tropical paradise at the Polynesian Village Resort to living the movie magic at Disney’s Art of Animation, the theming makes the entire vacation feel like a storybook.
• Convenient Meal Plans and Dining Reservations: On-site guests can access Disney’s dining plans (when available) and book reservations at restaurants up to 60 days in advance. Dining within the Disney bubble can make mealtimes more magical, whether it’s character breakfasts or fine dining at restaurants like Steakhouse 71.
Considerations:
• Cost: Staying on-site can be significantly more expensive than other options, especially at deluxe resorts. Value resorts like Pop Century and All-Star Resorts are more budget-friendly, but the cost can still add up during peak seasons.
• Limited Space for Larger Families: If you’re traveling with a larger family or group, the standard hotel rooms at most Disney resorts might feel cramped compared to a rental house or apartment. Some resorts offer suites, but they come at a higher price point.
2. Staying on International Drive
International Drive (or I-Drive) is a popular option for those who want a central location with access to both Disney and other attractions like Universal Orlando and SeaWorld.
Benefits:
• Variety of Accommodation Options: International Drive offers a wide range of hotels, from budget-friendly options to luxury stays, allowing you to find a hotel that fits your budget. Many hotels offer amenities like free breakfast, pools, and family-sized rooms.
• Access to Other Attractions: If you’re planning to visit more than just Disney during your trip, staying on I-Drive can be convenient. You’ll be close to attractions like Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and ICON Park, making it easy to explore more of what Orlando has to offer.
• Dining and Shopping Options: International Drive is filled with restaurants, shopping centers, and entertainment options, making it easy to find a variety of dining experiences beyond Disney’s offerings. It’s ideal for families who want a break from theme park dining.
Considerations:
• Distance from Disney: While the I-Drive area is closer to Disney than some other areas, you’ll still need to drive or take a shuttle to reach the parks. Many hotels on I-Drive offer shuttle services to Disney (most with an additional cost), but you’ll need to plan around their schedules, which may not be as flexible as Disney’s transportation.
• Less Themed Experience: Staying off-site means you won’t get the same Disney theming or ambiance at your hotel. It can feel like a regular hotel stay, which might be a downside for those looking for a more immersive Disney experience.
3. Renting an Apartment in Kissimmee or Davenport
For families looking for more space and a home-away-from-home vibe, renting an apartment or vacation home in nearby areas like Kissimmee or Davenport can be a great choice.
Benefits:
• Space and Comfort: Renting an apartment or house offers more space, with options like multiple bedrooms, living rooms, and even private pools. This is ideal for larger families or those who want to spread out and have room for relaxation after a long day at the parks.
• Cost-Effective for Longer Stays: If you’re planning an extended stay, renting a home can be more budget-friendly than booking multiple hotel rooms. You’ll also save on dining costs by having access to a full kitchen, making it easy to prepare breakfast or have dinner in.
• Private Amenities: Many vacation rentals in Kissimmee and Davenport come with amenities like private pools, game rooms, and laundry facilities. It’s a great option for families who want to enjoy downtime away from the crowds.
Considerations:
• Driving and Parking Fees: Staying in Kissimmee or Davenport means you’ll need a car or taxi, and you’ll have to pay for parking at Disney parks, (Can range from $20-$30 a day)
which can add up. While some rentals may offer shuttles, driving is often more convenient to match your schedule.
• Distance from the Disney Magic: Depending on where your rental is located, you could be 15-30 minutes away from Disney World. This means you’ll have a bit of a commute each day, which can feel tiring after a long day at the parks.
Which Option Is Best for Your Family?
• If you want the full Disney experience and convenience: Staying on-site is the best choice. It’s perfect for families who want to be immersed in the magic from the moment they wake up to the end of the day. The perks like early access to parks and transportation make it especially appealing.
• If you’re looking to explore more of Orlando and want a central location: International Drive offers a balance between affordability and access to multiple attractions. It’s great for families who plan to spend time at both Disney and other theme parks.
• If you need space and comfort for a larger family or a longer stay: A vacation rental in Kissimmee or Davenport can be a fantastic option. You’ll enjoy the flexibility of having more space, cooking meals, and relaxing in a home-like setting.
We personally have done all three options. Our favourite way and go to is staying on-site. We are big fans of Disney and Universal and try and get both parks done on our trip. The past couple of trips we have stayed in both Disney and Universal to get the best of both worlds and benefit from the perks of staying on-site. Universal also has transportation and early entry which is great to get an hour in before the crowds hit. (Mainly to get on Hagrid's IYKYK)
So if you don't mind moving hotel and the budget allows you to do so, then it really is the ultimate experience!!!
No matter where you stay, a trip to Disney World is bound to be filled with magical moments. The key is to choose the accommodation that best matches your family’s needs and travel style. Happy planning, and may your Disney adventure be unforgettable!
